Christian Civics Foundations (Spring 2022)

Develop a constructive vision for faith in a polarized age.

Faith in Jesus should make us honest, selfless, diligent and humble. It should motivate us to seek the peace and well-being of other people, without leaving us obsessed with dominating the conversation or winning the battle.

Our political culture doesn’t condition us to think, speak or act that way, so we need help learning to live out the gospel in the public square.

Christian Civics Foundations is a dynamic six-week workshop that will help you transition from assigning blame for what’s wrong in our politics to assuming responsibility for building a healthier community. Together with other men and women from around the country, you’ll learn to see your role in the US differently and break out of the us/them thinking that is damaging our churches, our cities and our world.

Is this course for me?

Is the current political climate making it hard for you to love the church? Do you have a hard time understanding Christians on the other side of the aisle? Are you desperate for a way to connect your faith to your politics that can give you hope and spur you into action without declaring some kind of misguided holy war against anyone who disagrees with you?

If the only options you’re seeing are cynicism, extremism and despair, but you’re sure there must be another option, then this is the course for you.

If you think it’s important for Christians to make our faith look good to people who don’t share our faith—or our news feeds!—then this course is for you.

And if you think your faith in Christ means you have to learn to talk with people who don’t share your values, this course is for you.

What does the course cover?

This six-week workshop covers some of the most foundational questions and challenges Christians face in the public square:

Apr. 09: Subjects or Stewards: A Biblical Perspective on Representative Government
Apr. 16: The Manner of Our Lives: What is Our Witness in the Public Square?
Apr. 23: Neither Separatist nor Extremist: How Our Public Witness Goes Wrong
Apr. 30: Political Diversity: Why Christians (Should) Disagree About (Some) Important Questions
May 07: Idolatry and Heresy: How Partisan Culture Malforms Us
May 14: Redemptive Community: Discipleship and Relationships Across Major Divides

How will I learn and grow?

Each session is conducted on Zoom from 8pm to 9:30pm Eastern time, followed by an optional weekly “coffee hour” for extended conversation and Q&A. Drawing on our team’s decades of experience as full-time political professionals, ministry leaders, and researchers, each 90-minute class session features biblical, non-partisan examinations of faithfulness in the US today and rich discussion on how to put that teaching into practice. Between classes, you’ll have light homework assignments that will help prepare you for the next round of discussion, along with optional additional reading if you want to dive deeper into a topic we covered that week.

Pricing and Other Registration Information

We are suggesting a donation of $100 per participant for this program, but we don’t want price to be an obstacle to participation.

If you are registering multiple participants, please note that we require a separate email address for each participant, and we require each participant to log in to the meeting on their own device, rather than gathering around a single phone or laptop together.

Registrants will get an email with pre-reading, notes and follow-up information a week before each meeting, plus a reminder email an hour before each session begins.

Suggested Donation

We want Christian Civics Foundations to be available to everyone who would benefit from it, but developing and hosting the classes takes a lot of time and a lot of work. If you are planning to attend—or just want to help make future cohorts possible—please consider making a donation today. We suggest a donation of $100 per attendee (or $50 for students and/or ministry professionals).
